More than fifty years later, some large telemetry-based analyses make similar claims about skewed output. A widely circulated 2024 post attributed to a Stanford-affiliated researcher, summarized by ShiftMag, described a data set of more than 50,000 engineers across hundreds of companies and claimed that about 9.5% of engineers met a “0.1x” threshold, defined as producing about one-tenth of the median measured output. The underlying data and methodology have not been published in a peer-reviewed venue, but the claim reflects how heavy-tailed distributions can appear in instrumented work logs.

Concentrating experience in this way increases the probability that critical paths are staffed by people who can navigate complexity without constant escalation.
Process then spreads expertise beyond the initial group. Mandatory peer review, lightweight design documents and post-incident analyses that record decision logic all help convert tacit knowledge into shared assets.
These artifacts let newer team members contribute sooner and allow managers to rotate engineers without resetting entire systems. They also make it easier to detect when important work depends on a single person, because gaps in documentation or review become visible.
Culture closes the loop. Clear performance baselines, transparent metrics and regular feedback reduce the likelihood that chronic underperformance persists for years without action. The data from 1968 to 2024 suggests that talent distributions in many creative and technical fields are not simple bell curves. Instead, they show heavy concentration of output in a relatively small fraction of employees.
